-The High School Detective of the East
-Downgraded to elementary school detective.

Shinichi is the son of a retired actress, Yukiko Kudo, and a world famous author, Yuusaku Kudo. His mother retired after she turned twenty so that she could live the life of a normal Japanese housewife. His father continued to write his best selling series ‘Night Baron and started helping the police force out with certain cases as Yuusaku is a much better Detective then Shinichi.

At an early age Shinichi showed signs of having the potential to become a great detective and usually dragged his friend, Ran Mouri along on many of his adventures. At age seven Shinichi was given a challenge that was meant for him to give up on and give his father but he was far too stubborn to do as the challenger expected. Unknown to the little detective, and still unknown to him to this day, that challenger was none other then the Original Kaitou Kid, Kaitou 1412.

When he was fourteen his parents decided to move to L.A. and Shinichi chose to stay in Japan, probably so he could stay with Ran. From age fourteen to sixteen he lived alone and built up quite the career as a famous high school detective. At age sixteen Ran won the regionals championship in karate and as a reward Shinichi promised to take her to an amusement park known as Tropical Land.

Ah, Tropical Land, the place Conan hates most in the world. There is actually a very good reason for that. While on a date with Ran, sixteen year old Shinichi Kudo came across a case dealing with decapitation and set eyes on two men in black trench coats for the first time. He quickly solved the murder and while walking with Ran noticed one of the men in black from earlier acting suspiciously, thinking nothing of it he bid farewell to Ran and followed after the man.

He tailed the burly man behind a building and witnessed a blackmail transaction, in the manga, he whips out a camera and discretely snaps a few shots. However, Shinichi forgot a very important detail while spying on the suspicious man; there were two.

Before he can react properly, the other man comes up behind him and beats him over the head with a blunt object. Shinichi stumbles and falls forward, unable to move. Instead of shooting him dead like any other thug in black, they force feed him an untested poison and leave him for dead.

However, he does not die! Instead his body has a rare reaction to the poison and he shrinks! And it is much less then painless. He body over heats and his chest throbs, he thinks about how his bones feel like they’re melting as they shift and reform to a smaller size. Soon after, he passes out as the pain is just too much.

When he comes too, Shinichi realizes that everyone seems much bigger then they should and shortly after discovers that he’d been shrunk. He escapes the concerned police officers and runs to his house. Too bad for him, he can’t reach the door to let himself in. He meets up with his neighbor, and through some fancy deductions only Shinichi could pull off convinces Agasa he’s who he says he is and the two decide to conceal his identity.

Shortly after that, Ran comes looking for Shinichi and discovers the small six year old, who had quickly shoved on a pair of his dad’s old glasses as a make shift disguise. She presses him for a name and he combines names from Edogawa Rampo and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to get ‘Conan Edogawa.’

And thus! Conan is born. Agasa convinces Ran to let Conan live with her and her father as Kogoro is a detective and there is a chance someone will bring in a case dealing with the mysterious men in black.

A part from Agasa, several others know the true identity of the chibi detective. His parents, another high school detective by the name of Heiji Hattori, Kaitou Kid (through some fancy eavesdropping) and an ex member of the organization that shrunk him, Ai Haibara. She’s in the same boat as he is but took the poison willingly with the intent to end her own life.

Personality:

Shinichi is a detective that never takes a break. Even if he's not on a case he frequently finds himself curious about the people he comes in contact with. He is always using his detective skills to figure out someone's profession or where they were five minutes before he met them. When solving a case he focuses on one thing-The Truth. He doesn't generally care about the people involved in the case as long as he figures out what happened, why it happened and how to prove it happened or prove who did it so that he can bring that one truth to light.

Murder and the most bizarre cases are his favorite kinds as he generally has little to no interest in thieves and finds adultery cases to be stupid and a waste of his time. He also isn't fond of kidnapping but he will take a case like it if it's brought to him. When solving cases, most people make the assumption that Shinichi is out for justice. That is not entirely accurate as he is mainly out for fun. He is very much one of those detectives that play the game for the game's sake. He is a teenager after all, and he looks at his cases like a puzzle- cat and mouse. He doesn't usually give a damn about the victims of the murderers which is obvious since he's not affected by most crime scenes. He's seen bodies hacked to pieces and only casually mentioned this to his best friend, telling her he doesn't let the job affect him. He is out for justice in some senses to the word, but mostly he's out to solve the really complex puzzles which is why he likes the really complex cases that baffle the police. Especially locked-rooms murders.

Being the son of a retired actress he has a love for theatrics and loves to play out the drama of a situation and make a big show of his deductions. He loves to start from the beginning and go over every aspect of the case to keep his audience guessing until he finally reveals the culprit. He intentionally leaves out the most crucial detail of his accusations just to bait the culprit into demanding he show the proof. Which, he has no trouble doing.

He may be a capable detective and share almost all the traits of a classic detective but he has his faults such as his impatience and the biggest one being his recklessness. Even if it's all a game to him there is one aspect for the puzzle that he takes very seriously and that is a life. If he thinks he can stop a murder he will try, even if it puts him in danger. He has been known to run off without warning and usually right into danger. Nothing he can’t handle however, as long as he ‘s got his trusty kick shoes and belt, or even the wrist watch can get him out of a bind.

Shinichi is what you would call a mystery freak. This doesn’t change between when he’s Shinichi and when he’s Conan. He has read the series Sherlock Holmes more times then he can probably count. He’s been to a Holmes convention, had to take thousand question test and most likely, got a perfect score on it. The Kudou library is filled from floor to ceiling with mystery books and it’s an easy bet to say he’s read every last one of them.

Before shrinking, Shinichi was a very arrogant, spoiled rich boy. He was under the belief he’s the best thing since sliced bread and his attitude towards others made this very apparent. As Shinichi, he could move around crime scenes freely and didn't need any help while conducting an investigation. Now that he's stuck as the grade-schooler Conan Edogawa that has changed drastically. He has to watch how he words things and basically lead the adults to the right answers. It can be very annoying but through it he's learned a few social skills and also how to be a manipulative little brat if he makes just the right expressions.

It’s less noticeable as Shinichi, but Conan seems to have problems tolerating the less than intelligent. It’s seen most often when he’s talking to the Detective Boys ( a group of kids that have adopted Conan as their friend), or if someone is flat out refusing to use their brain.

While Mysteries usually have his undivided attention there is a part of him that is still a normal teenager; Ran. Ran Mouri is Shinichi’s childhood friend and love interest. He’s so hung up over her that his love for her truly deserves it’s own part in his personality. He admires Ran’s strength and compassion above all other things about her and truly sees her as the most important person in the world. He would do anything for her. Even as Conan, his love for her hasn’t changed, even though they live together. He hates having to lie about his identity to her but he’d rather she stayed safe. If Ran ends up in danger Conan gets reckless and all the intelligence he holds tends to go down the drain.

Abilities/Strengths and Weaknesses:

Shinichi is purely human and, aside from shrinking hasn't even had a brush with the supernatural- he refuses to believe it exists. However, he does have one ability and that's his intelligence. The kid is like a sponge and is always willing to learn new things as he takes a very different stance than Sherlock Holmes when it comes to keeping up with certain subjects. Holmes believes that he only needs to learn about subjects that would be useful to him as a detective while Shinichi is under the impression that there is no telling what might be relevant in a case and makes it a point to soak up all the knowledge he can. He is also quite gifted at soccer.

Strengths:

His freakish intelligence - This gives him an advantage over most people he comes up against, especially since most people only see him as a little boy which generally turns out to be their downfall. It is also how he's able to stay level headed and think through a situation, believing that as long as he can keep a level head he can get himself out of just about any situation. (spoilers: he's wrong.)

Determination - Shinichi does not take failure well and it's because of this he will not back down from anything without an impressive fight. Especially now that he's trapped in what he considers to be a pathetic excuse for a body, he strives to keep his weaknesses from interfering with his job.

Incredibly High Pain Tolerance - This is more than likely born of growing and shrinking in such a short time on numerous occasions, but it helps him stay focused on other things and allows him to ignore his pain. This can be both a good and bad thing as it also means he will push himself up until he either passes out or accomplishes his goal. As I said, he does not take failure well.

Athletic - He likes to stay as physically fit as possible-taking up soccer specifically as a means to hone his detective reflexes. And now that he's trapped as a small child his athletic ability is all the more important to him. He does not want to be seen as weak and in his mind that's all he can ever be while trapped as seven year old.

Observation and Deductive Abilities - The thing he is best at and good thing too as both are something no detective can be without. He may not have started out as observant as he is now (In fact it's likely he didn't) but, he has trained himself on the methods of Sherlock Holmes, applying them to every aspect of his life and living by a kind of "What Would Holmes Do?" lifestyle. He's not quite as good as the legendary detective, but he's almost there, however, he is still a kid and he's still learning.

Acting - While his skills aren't always the best and he's not exactly consistent with his child-act, it can't be denied that he's an excellent actor, able to fool most everyone into thinking he's actually a seven year old kid, just a little too mature for his age. It's his acting, at this point, that is the reason he's made it so long without such a flimsy little lie being exposed.

Weaknesses

His Freakish Intelligence - Shinichi is very well aware of just how smart he is which gives him a very arrogant 'Smarter than thou' complex. He generally assumes himself to be the smartest person in the room, thinking that if he's smarter than the person he's up against he can get himself out of a dangerous situation alive. (unscathed is never really his top priority.) Obviously, he's never been killed because of this way of thinking but he has forgotten on occasion that sometimes raw intelligence can only do so much in certain situations.

Congenital Amusia - A musical disability that cannot be explained by brain damage, hearing loss, or lack of musical education. In short, Conan is tone deaf-this is stated early on in the series but blurs a bit as it progresses-(suddenly a boy not even familiar with what a "sharp" is able to play the violin). He cannot carry a tune to save his life, and while his mother has tried to teach him some kind of musical ability it just never stuck-meaning that he is incapable of learning music despite having well above average audiometry, intellectual, and memory skills.

**(( A Note: One of the movies have him listed as having perfect pitch which cannot be true of a true amusiac. It seems more to lean in the direction that Shinichi's problem is that he has no relative pitch which is correctable with music training. However, I generally tend to play as being truly, and medically tone deaf as it has been shown that he has received training in music from both his mother and several teachers.

He is flat out embarrassed by his complete lack of musical talent and sees it as a flaw. He strives to be exactly like Sherlock Holmes, and if he could correct his problem, he no doubt would. Especially after suffering through a teacher that would hit him with a baton anytime he sang off key in middle school. This leads me to think it is not something he can help, he's tried on several occasions to correct the problem but he just can't.))

Trapped in the Body of a Seven Year old - Possibly his biggest weakness at the moment. As a seven year old, no one tends to take him seriously and since he only weighs about forty pounds he is very easy to pick up and throw (something that has happened) because of his small size he's much more fragile than he used to be and generally seen as an easy target when he goes to confront murderers alone.

Reckless - He has a tendency to jump into situations without thinking. Perhaps it's because he refuses to let his seven year old body limit what he can and can't do, but it is very limiting and the lack of forethought can and has gotten him seriously injured on a number of occasions. But he has a job to protect the population and he cares about the population as individuals which means he's very likely to throw his life on the line for a perfect stranger.

Curiosity - While this is also a strength, it is mostly a weakness where he's concerned. It was his curiosity, after all that landed him in the situation he is now in.

Social Skills - He can easily pretend to have social skills but even he is aware that he is severely lacking something in this department, often times having issues in figuring out just how to react in certain situations only to make everything worse. He's well aware of his social short comings, often coming off as arrogant and rude, to hide this, he tends to speak in an overly formal way. However, he can only use this method while in his real form of the seventeen year old detective. (this may or may not be a result of a lack of emotional development needed as a child)

Competitive - He does not back down from any challenge put to him which can be both very good and very bad. In his case it's usually bad. Because he is unable to turn down a challenge he's developed quite a reputation as the grade school detective that can match wits against the international jewel thief, Kaitou kid. A reputation and the the spotlight is something he is supposed to be avoiding. The whole reason he changed his name was to lie low and hide from some very wide-spread dangerous people. He is not doing that by appearing on the news. He is also more likely to push himself harder and refuse to take it easy when rising to a challenge.

Control Freak - He likes being in control, as Shinichi is was purely because he liked being in control, as Conan it has become an obsessive necessity. He thinks, as long as he's in control of everything around him, he can't possibly be taken by surprise. If a situation falls out of his control he gets irritable, anxious, and paranoid.

Paranoia - But is it really paranoia? He has every right to be terrified of what would be coming after his life should his secret slip to the wrong person. The organization is a very wide spread thing with unbelievable weapons at their disposal so it's no surprise really that he does not fully trust anyone. However, this makes it very difficult for him to open up and make new friends.

He always knew the moment he woke up if he was in the same place he fell asleep thanks to his habit of bunching up a lump into a blanket he he usually slept on top of. It wasn't the most comfortable sleeping arrangement but he learned to get over it-if that lump wasn't pressing against somewhere- his leg, his stomach, even his arm, then he knew he'd been moved, and upon waking up this morning he'd noticed immediately that his tell-tale lump was gone. He'd been moved. After sorting through and crushing down the more paranoid explanations he was able to work out that he wasn't bound at all and the door to the room he'd woken up in was unlocked-not typical of any other kidnapping he'd been a victim of.

He pushed the door open and spent a few hour or so running through the house, checking on this or that, rummaging through drawers and closets all in pursuit of a note. There must have been one-or something to explain why he was just dropped into a bed and left in a distinctly western style house. Nothing of concern could be found indoors so he pushed the front door open with a bit of difficulty due to his small size. It's not just the house that's western style-it's the whole street, hardly unheard of in this day and age but something unpleasant tugged at the back of his mind, insisting that he has somehow found his way out of Japan. And he doesn't have a passport. Lovely.

Letting out a deep sigh he reaches into his pocket in search of his phone only to find it disturbingly empty-not even his pocket notebook or pen are where they should be. Had he dropped them in that house? Surely, someone that prides them self on observation skills would notice a phone or notebook falling out of their chest pocket. Had they been removed? Panic started to creep in, flooding to the front of his mind before he can push it back. Where was his phone, and more importantly, where was he?
